The American Planning Association’s Foresight Team produce an annual Trend Report for Planners. The 2024 Trend Report has recently been published and there’s a lot in there of immediate relevance to the challenges we face here in New Zealand

2024 TREND REPORT FOR PLANNERS

The purpose of the Trend Report is to share potential drivers of change and shifts that will possibly impact the work of planners and/or the communities we serve as planners. This is their third Trend Report for Planners, and it builds on a knowledge base to predict future challenges. As in previous years, the 2024 Trend Report features a list of over 100 existing, emerging, and potential future trends that the team have identified as relevant to planning around the world.

The trends are structured within three timeframes. Act Now includes those global trends that we are addressing now such as Housing Challenges and the looming climate impacts and the trend of increased political polarisation that we’re seeing across the work. The report forecasts what planners need to Prepare for including the evolution of jobs, the collective feeling of moving toward a polycrisis, and changes to bricks and mortar retail. The Learn and Watch section of the Trends report tasks planners to look forward toward a future of energy innovation, mitigating global warming through geoengineering and more!
