The NPS FM 2020 introduced new ideas in freshwater management, together with new terminology, new obligations and a focus around Te Mana o te Wai.
This interactive workshop explores the NPS and focuses on active involvement with tangata whenua - keeping Te Mana o te Wai at the heart of the implementation process. Participants work through how long a new freshwater plan process takes, how to get started and the information needed (including applying NPS exceptions). Examples of freshwater management issues are highlighted.

This half-day workshop provides an overview of the purpose and roles of: objectives, policies and rules in RMA Plans. It then focuses on the foundations of good policy writing. Included are: how to express difficult concepts in policy writing, and how to use appropriate policy language. Case studies are used to examine good and bad practice. Group discussion is encouraged around writing issues and difficulties.
This course is useful to help planners acquire skills in district and regional policy writing, in the RMA context.

Designations are a key tool under the RMA for consenting, constructing, operating and future-proofing medium to large-scale projects. Few organisations or people can exercise designation powers. But the practice of establishing, applying for and using designations under the RMA is poorly understood.
