Papa Pounamu is a technical interest group which aligns with the Special Interest Groups within Te Kokiringa Taumata (NZPI). The group focuses on the role of Māori and Pacific peoples in the New Zealand planning framework, and the integration of Māori perspectives in resource management planning and decision-making.
With new institutional arrangements to manage resources in New Zealand being established through legislation in partnership with Iwi, the time and need is this is greater now, and more relevant, than ever.
Papa Pounamu seeks to complement the strategic direction of NZPI by providing a fully informed Māori and Pacific perspective so that the NZPI are capable of responding to the issues and challenges that will arise in the planning profession in NZ. The co-existence of two paradigms in managing New Zealand’s natural resources will need leadership, and with the important role planners perform in managing these resources, the NZPI, through the support of Papa Pounamu, will be capable and well positioned to support those practitioners.
