Papa Pounamu is a technical interest group aligned with the Special Interest Groups within Te Kokiringa Taumata (NZPI or the NZ Planning Institute). The group focuses on the role of Māori in the New Zealand planning framework, and the integration of Māori perspectives in resource management planning and decision-making.

With new institutional arrangements to manage resources in Aotearoa New Zealand being established (and re-established) through legislation, the time and need for this is greater now, and more relevant, than ever.

Papa Pounamu seeks to complement the strategic direction of NZPI by providing a fully informed Māori perspective so that the NZPI are capable of responding to the issues and challenges that will arise in the planning profession in Aotearoa NZ.

The co-existence of two paradigms in managing our natural resources will need leadership, and with the important role planners perform in managing these resources, the NZPI, through the support of Papa Pounamu, is capable and well positioned to support those practitioners.

The change of government means “a change of policies and a change of approach”. Read more in our December Pānui ...
