At the end of last week NZPI lodged a submission on the Resource Management (Freshwater & Other Matters) Amendment Bill. This submission is the Institute’s next phase of engagement in the reform of the Resource Management Act.

NZPI advocates for a long-term, strategic approach to reform of the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). This Bill represents a collection of discrete changes to the RMA, which are made in the context for further amendments to come, followed by full replacement of the RMA, and alongside a programme to review national direction. The submission asserts that New Zealand’s resource management system should not be subject to ad hoc changes and that the Government needs to progress this work in a logical and evidence-based manner, leaning on the expertise of officials, and allow Parliament a genuine opportunity to mould legislation that is enduring. NZPI will continue to provide expertise through active engagement with Ministers and Select Committees
