Submissions to the 2024 Commonwealth Association of Planning (CAP) Awards are now open! These awards recognise Outstanding Planning Achievement in the Commonwealth and in 2021 and 2022 entries from New Zealand were winners. Will you be next?

The CAP awards are your opportunity to see where you benchmark on the world stage. They aim to disseminate outstanding planning practice in the Commonwealth. They are an opportunity demonstrate the valuable role that planners and planning have in the Commonwealth in helping to create resilient and sustainable communities and adequate shelter for all. These awards provide a forum to promote the ways in which the science and art of planning can benefit the public and improve the well-being of society in the Commonwealth and help deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

New Zealand projects have been on this stage before, with Te Whaihanga, New Zealand (Ako Aotearoa, Auckland Council, Te Hana Te Ao Marama) winning the award for ‘Planning for equitable and inclusive cities and human settlements’ in 2021. Then Boffa Miskell and Stantec and took out the Planning for Conservation of the Built & Natural Environment and Cultural Heritage award for The Milford Opportunities Masterplan Milford Sound-Piopiotahi project in 2022.

The 2024 award categories are:

  • Planning for cities and human settlements / plan making in the Commonwealth
  • Planning for climate change and adaptation.
  • Planning for equitable and inclusive cities and human settlements.
  • Planning for the Conservation of the Built and Natural Environment and Cultural Heritage
  • Young Planner award: Submit an essay entry on the topic: Cities by Citizen Harnessing innovations for active participation towards sustainable cities and human settlements.

The closing date for submissions is midnight BST, September 9th, 2024.
