Solar Farms: Rising to the Challenge of Clean Energy Production

The New Zealand Government has an aspirational goal of 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2035 and is aiming to achieve a net zero carbon economy by 2050. Solar energy generation is an emerging technology in New Zealand, with a number of international operators starting to establish solar farms throughout New Zealand. While solar energy development and capacity in New Zealand remains relatively low compared to other countries thus far, momentum is building such that utility scale solar photovoltaic systems and agrivoltaic systems are gaining consents and progressing through to construction.

Together we will explore the development of agrivoltaic systems in New Zealand, including their benefits. We will also discuss the challenges of consenting new technology under conventional planning methods and how planners and the regulatory system can enable utility scale solar systems.
