Sponsors must be a Full member, who has more than three years of experience as a Full Member, Supporters can be a Full or Intermediate members.
Student: You need 1 Full NZPI member to sponsor your application
Graduate: You need 2 NZPI members to sponsor/support your application
Intermediate: You need 2 NZPI members to sponsor/support your application.
Full: You need 3 NZPI members to sponsor/support your application.
Associate: You will need 3 NZPI members to sponsor/support your application.
If you submit an application that doesn't meet sponsor/supporter requirements - it slows processing as the application must be returned and new sponsors/supporters sought.
All candidates seeking eligibility for entry into Full Membership of NZPI are required to meet below constitutional requirements.
5.2.1 Completed an academic planning programme at any NZ University, College or other teaching institution that has been accredited under policies and procedures adopted by the Institute’s Board; or
5.2.2 Holds a recognised membership in any international planning institute with which the Institute has formalised a reciprocal membership recognition agreement and meet the specific requirements for membership in the Institute as defined in that agreement; or
5.2.3 Has undertaken a course of tertiary training which does not satisfy the criteria specified in the above clauses but has worked in planning or associated activities for a period of at least seven years, so that the combination of training and experience enable the applicant to exhibit a clear, mature, professional and ethical attitude to, commitment to and understanding of planning.
5.3 Every application for election as a Full Members shall show evidence of practical experience and an understanding of planning as defined in the Regulations of the Institute.
5.3.1 Every applicant for election as a Full Member shall satisfactorily complete a personal interview by a Membership Interview Panel in accordance with the Regulations of the Institute.
The role of sponsor is two fold:
The role of the Sponsor is to review and ultimately testify that a Candidate member's practical work experience as having met the requirements set by the profession, prior to the final submission of that documented experience to the NZPI Membership Convenor.
The sponsor will also be asked to advise via the Sponsor Declaration, which can be found in the Full Membership Application Form, on the following:
The Membership Convenor will contact the sponsor prior to an interview being approved to enable discussion regarding the application.
A sponsor also has the role of ongoing support to the candidate, throughout their application for full membership.
The Sponsor must be a Full Member of the Institute in good standing who has more than three years of experience as a Full Member.
The Sponsor must agree to the Candidate memberâs request to serve as their Sponsor, and will be provided with this guidance note by the candidate upon agreeing to serve as a Sponsor.
Sponsors should carefully review and familiarize themselves with the Guidance note, and use it for reference as they undertake their role.
The Chair of the Interview Panel will contact the sponsor within 24 hours following the interview to advise the sponsor of the Panelâs decision.
If the candidate has been unsuccessful in his/her application the Chair will discuss with the Sponsor how the Sponsor might best support the candidate's progress towards a subsequent application and a letter outlining the content of the discussion forwarded within 10 days of the interview to the applicant.
