This is a twelve-month programme designed for motivated planners. Leadership in Planning has a different focus to that of general corporate leadership. Leadership in planning has never been more important in New Zealand and the world. Emerging Leaders in Planning enables individuals to build a foundation for their careers that is relevant to themselves and the profession.

This is a different concept of leadership programme. There will be two face to face meetings initially and at the conclusion of the programme, but all other learning will be virtual through personal coaching, group webinars and self-paced learning modules. This will be more flexible for those with time constraints. It will also enable better learning through regular inputs over a longer period.

This programme is for planners with between 5 and 15 years of experience. We assume that in planning, it is not necessary to be in a formal leadership role to be a leader.

The workshop will:

  • Cover personal leadership needs in planning roles for the future.
  • Enable participants to gain confidence and build on this in their daily work.
  • Encourage delegates to discover their unique, personal identities as leaders.
  • Provide a framework for developing character and career until retirement and beyond.
  • Form a basis for any more specific future coaching or mentoring.
  • Strengthen the Planning profession through more effective leadership and engaged planners.

Learning Outcomes and takeaways:

  • Personal awareness of the qualities and skills needed for leadership.
  • Three personal profiles and clarity around personal motivation and direction.
  • A lifelong framework for developing personal character and abilities.
  • An understanding of the daily activities and practices needed for development.
  • A full digital set of leadership handouts and personal profiles.
  • Connection with a wide network of planners across the country.
