Elevating Communities: An Innovative Approach to Community Engagement for Removing Pedestrian Level Crossings and Homai Station

The Auckland Level Crossing Removal Programme will remove all level crossings across the Auckland rail network to improve safety and remove conflict points between people and trains. Auckland Transport (AT) is working collaboratively with a range of partners to provide a safer rail network for all Aucklanders before we introduce more frequent trains. AT is starting to remove 7 pedestrian-only level crossings as part of the first stage of this removal programme, including 2 level crossings connected to Homai Train Station.

Homai encompasses a diverse community of people with unique needs and perspectives, including the blind and low vision campus adjacent to the train station. Recognising this diversity, AT, in collaboration with BECA, embarked on a journey to seamlessly integrate innovative digital tools into the consultation process to enhance inclusivity for everyone.

Traditional consultation methods were strengthened with new methods not previously used by AT, including a 3D printed model and automated voice announcements at the station. The 3D model provided a tactile experience for blind and low vision groups to interact with, supporting a better understanding of the proposed changes through physical touch. This not only yielded valuable feedback for the project team, but also revolutionised the consultation process. Many people had not previously participated in any consultation before, and the 3D model facilitated a sense of inclusion that these people had not previously experienced.

The success of community engagement is ultimately attributed to the project team's foresight in recognising the diverse needs of the Homai community, which has set a new benchmark in shaping the future of engagement.
