The Amberley Beach Coastal Adaptation Plan

The Amberley Beach Coastal Adaptation Plan documents how the Amberley Beach community will take control of their future and how, as a community, they will adapt to the changing hazard risk over the next 100 years.

It responds to coastal erosion, coastal inundation, rising groundwater, fluvial flooding and pluvial flooding considering the impacts of climate change.

Planners were central to the project. Planning provides the skills to balance the competing needs of different community members, different generations, and the
    environment.

Often, we get caught in engineering our way out of problems. Using a planning lens to undertake such projects allows us to step back and consider the full range of
    options available.

Council wanted to engage with the entire community, giving every individual an equal voice in the conversation. It was important to Council that the plan was owned by the community. Planners help to facilitate the discussion and provide technical planning advice. Jacobs assisted by providing science advice directly to the community.

This method of engagement required the team to develop and use engaging and innovative ways of communicating technical information to foster understanding, engagement and empower the community to make decisions founded on science. Engagement was embedded into every phase of the project.

It is easy to visualise, design, and price protection options. Proactive relocation is much harder. The community did not shy away from these discussions and an innovative proposal for proactive retreat and land banking was developed as part of the Adaptation Plan to enable the community to have control over their future.
