09 DEC - UPDATE:
Queenstown
Hawkes Bay, we heard your call for an NZPI / RMLA Roadshow to Reform event in your hometown. Dates are tight getting around the country and your Queenstown in-person event is just a few days away ...

Now that the submission period for the Spatial Planning and Natural and Built Environment Bills has opened CLICK HERE, we’re ready to help you with the next steps.

As resource management practitioners who’ll be responsible for implementing these bills, we have until 5th February 2023 to make a contribution to the most significant reform of resource management law in over 30 years. We'd like to support members in developing their submissions, and we’re hoping to see important discussions on key aspects of change during our upcoming workshop series.

Just in case you missed our email this week, here’s what you need to know about our upcoming reform workshops …

We’ve been making our way through the Natural and Built Environment and Spatial Planning Bills to understand what’s new, what has stayed the same, and how the Bills measure up against NZPI’s pre-release positions. NZPI has partnered with the Resource Management Law Association to bring you a series of workshops starting next week for NZPI and RMLA members.

Each workshop on the roadshow will provide a summary of the new system, covering the new purpose and principles and the shift to outcomes-based planning, the National Planning Framework, Regional Spatial Strategies, NBE Planning, consenting and enforcement, and some of the things in between. Each 2-hour workshop will be about half presentation and half Q&A. We might not have all the answers to your questions, but we are hoping to get a good discussion going on the key aspects of change. It will be a great way to get ready for preparing submissions on the bills.

As a joint roadshow between NZPI and RMLA, the presenters are a mix of planners and lawyers. The NZPI presenters are Emily Grace, NZPI’s Principal Policy Advisor, and Philip Brown, Director of Campbell Brown. The RMLA presenters are Bronwyn Carruthers KC and Helen Andrews, partner at The Environmental Lawyers.

The presentation at each workshop will be generally the same, but the questions and discussion that follows is likely to vary from location to location. NZPI and RMLA will be represented at all workshops but in some locations not all speakers are available.
