Every year NZPI, with the generous support of WSP, award the Papa Pounamu Whakatutukitanga scholarship to a student studying an NZPI accredited planning degree at undergraduate or postgraduate level. It recognises excellence and attainment by a student planner involved in Māori planning in an environmental framework.

We’ve had exceptional candidates and scholars each year. Last years’ recipient Jasmine Donald reflected recently on her internship at WSP’s offices in Nelson over the summer.

“Returning home and being a part of the WSP team in Nelson has been fantastic. Experiencing and working on projects from around the region that are so familiar was a big highlight. Being able to step out on-site and have this hands-on experience to appreciate the magnitude of work involved in planning will be highly beneficial to my ongoing career.

I have also thoroughly enjoyed the range of work, with many projects extending to working with iwi in the North Island. This has involved providing consenting and submission resources to iwi for capacity and capability building.

The Nelson team has been nothing but welcoming, stepping into what has been my first real experience in the profession. I want to extend a huge thank you, especially to Nathan Capper, Reuben Peterson, and Marcus Fletcher. I really appreciate your help, support, and guidance over the summer.

I would really encourage all Māori undergraduates studying towards a planning degree to apply for the Papa Pounamu Scholarship. The scholarship created between WSP and New Zealand Planning Institute is providing this opportunity of a pathway to assist more Māori planners in the profession. With the continued demand for Māori in resource management and our current political environment, this space will continue to be a pivotal aspect of RMA planning.”
