Sarah - Jayne McCurrach drew gasps from the room when she presented at the NZPI conference in April of this year. Her presentation followed soon after the Auckland Anniversary Floods and Cyclone Gabrielle and demonstrated just how much better prepared we should be in planning for risk. Presenting with her is Toka Tū Ake – EQC colleague Jo Horrocks, this duo will be presenting on our risky future at the 2024 NZPI Conference.
Sarah-Jayne is Tū Ake – EQC’s Head of Risk Reduction and Resilience. She leads the natural hazard and risk management programme. With a master’s in science, Sarah-Jayne’s passion is ensuring science and research is used to make risk-based decisions for our future, by enhancing our polices and practice.
Jo Horrocks is Tū Ake – EQC’s Chief Resilience and Research Officer. Jo has a background in Civil Defence and Emergency Management and led the development of the National Disaster Resilience Strategy. Jo is strongly motivated by tackling complex social issues and making progress towards improved outcomes for New Zealanders.
This dynamic pair will present on the need to change the model, to plan for the increasing risks faceed here in Aotearoa. They believe that land use planning needs to be more determinative and more representative of our tolerance to risk, to impacts, and to insurance cost. Pre-event planning needs to happen now to ensure we are well placed to respond rapidly and effectively when events happen.
Sarah-Jayne and Jo will be leading a plenary session - Our Risky Future at NZPIC24. Sponsored by Aurecon, this session will challenge us to stop talking about reducing risk, of tolerating our risky future, and actually do something about it.
