NZPI SPECIAL VIRTUAL EVENT | A Digital Future

Dr Phil Mourot

Senior Research Fellow, AI Institute, University of Waikato, and Senior Regional Hazard Advisor, Waikato Regional Council

Phil Mourot has been working in Natural Hazards for more than 20 years, across different disciplines such as geoscience, computer science, electronics, geophysics and seismology, and completed a PhD in applied seismology in France to predict rockfalls and landslides (Grenoble). Phil is involved in the TAIAO project. With a foot in local government and another foot in research, he can undertake research projects that align with local government issues and focus on helping New Zealand be a more resilient nation. Phil’s current research focuses on predicting the impact of floods using machine learning.

Building Resilience in Aotearoa using Digital Twins.

Thursday 1st September, 10:10Am (40 mins including Q&A)

During the last three years, Aotearoa, New Zealand, has faced an increasing number of disasters with far-reaching social, economic and structural disruption. Due to climate change and environmental degradation, we face a rapid increase in hazard severity and frequency. In 2021, a new annual record in insurance claims reached over $320 million. In July 2022, ICNZ recently published that such payments closed in on $200 million for the year to the end of June.

In an unstable world where changes happen so rapidly, how can emerging technology such as artificial intelligence help us be a more resilient nation? In this presentation, I will present how we can use the Digital Twins technology to combine physical and virtual models to help us better understand our environment and how to build resilience and protect our environment
