2023 NZPI CONFERENCE PRESENTATION

Towards a Modern, Digital Resource Management System

PRESENTED BY: Vij Kooyela

The reform of the resource management system is a major change to a significant piece of New Zealand legislation. To support the reforms, the Ministry for the Environment is looking into opportunities for ways to make the system more efficient and effective by using digital technologies in the future system.

We have identified three priorities for improving the digital resource management system:

  • improving digital services to enable better access and use of resource management services by users.
  • improving data interoperability to allow the flow of data and information across the resource management sector, including achieving consistency through data standards.
  • working in partnership to achieve greater alignment and sharing of resource management digital systems between central and local government, and iwi/hapū/Māori.

In this presentation, Vij will share the Ministry’s initial approach to foster an integrated resource management system through the delivery of data/digital initiatives. To test this initial approach, the Ministry will undertake a number of targeted engagements with central government, local government and iwi/Māori.
