How we respond to the effects of climate change and to increasing natural hazard risks is a crucial issue for all New Zealanders and it is not straightforward. It impacts on people, private property, infrastructure, businesses and every aspect of our lives. This presentation will include an analysis and commentary on the following matters:

  • An overview of NZ climate change litigation to date and lessons learnt from that.
  • Liability of local authorities in relation to protection of private land from natural hazards risks.
  • Current issues.
  • Reform.
  • Challenges for local authorities in responding to natural hazard risks.
