    The Milford Sound Piopiotahi Masterplan

Prepared jointly by Stantec and Boffa Miskell Limited, the Milford Sound Piopiotahi Masterplan sets a strategy for land use, transport and infrastructure, ecological conservation, natural hazard management, cultural experience and the operation of tourism within Piopiotahi Milford Sound, Milford Road, Te Anau Basin and the surrounding area. This masterplan was a result of distilling 16 separate disciplines of work to develop an integrated programme of investments, and governance and operational changes, designed to optimise tourism and economic development for the region and enhance and protect the distinctive character of place in Milford Sound Piopiotahi.

The multi-agency Milford Opportunities Project (MOP) recognized that the status quo was damaging Aotearoa New Zealand’s “brand” and its prime conservation estate. No one agency could solve these problems by itself.

The Masterplan has been developed through a wide range of stakeholder engagement, and consultation. It uses the best of Aotearoa New Zealand expertise, and draws upon international best practice. It has a 50-year horizon. The reward will be a renewal of built and natural assets, far better organisation, a wide range of nature experiences, a light environmental footprint, the telling of rich cultural histories, a deepened engagement for every visitor with the place and journey, and serious investment into the conservation estate of Te Rua-o-te-moko Fiordland National Park.

This Masterplan is a holistic effort to dramatically improve a place all New Zealanders hold dear. It offers insights and ideas that are applicable not only for Milford Sound Piopiotahi and Southland, but for all communities that rely on tourism.
